Senior Kayden Frazier and junior Kailei Gaines recently attended the Area Go Texan team sorting competition at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and won the grand championship beating more than 80 other contestants.

Along with the coveted title, the girls won saddles.

“I’m still shocked about even making it to the finals, much less being awarded champion,” Gaines said. “I was very nervous all day, even though I knew I had prepared. I prayed so many times that day and I am so excited to have shared this experience with Kayden”

In a sorting contest, competitors are judged on the time it takes them to herd or sort cattle, as well as their overall performance with the animals.

“Two people serve as the judges, and will judge in order, ranking each contestants performance from 0-9,” Gaines said. “Whichever team holds the fastest time to herd all of the cattle into the pin wins.”

Frazier and Gaines have competed in the sorting contest for several years, but this is the first time they have brought home a win.

“We have worked hard through the years and owe a lot to our horses,” Frazier said. “We also had a little luck on our side as the cattle really cooperated with us on that day.”
