Most of us have heard the saying, “you are what you eat.” The students in Mrs. Drexler’s biology classes now know in much more detail just what exactly that saying means.

Drexler’s  students recently conducted an experiment using common household foods. The students tested those food items for carbohydrates (in the form of starch or sugar), proteins, and lipids (or fats).

“The lab is meant to teach the students about making wise choices in consuming food on a daily basis. Many of them may not eat healthy as many of them are busy with band and sports, along side other activities,”  Drexler said. “This activity allows them to connect science to the real world and the choices they get to make.”

Drexler also explained that the lab allows the students to see how different molecules make up different types of compounds used to nourish our bodies.

“There are many questions we can answer from this lab,” Drexler said. “Such as, what is a carbohydrate, and why do we need it? What’s the difference between a starch carbohydrate and a sugar carbohydrate? Why are proteins important?”
