The Comanche Maiden Softball team traveled to Abilene and Eastland to compete in the best of three games series against the Merkel Badgers for the bi-district championship.

Though the Maidens came out strong in the first three innings, Merkel proved to be a forced to be reckoned with, winning 3-19. Comanche struggled the last half of the game especially with defense. Multiple missed grounders allowed Merkel to get many players on base, and strong batters brought them to home plate.

“Merkel’s whole line up could kill the ball,” Junior shortstop Jilian Hufstutler said. “We didn’t play to the best of our abilities, and that’s ultimately the reason we fell short of a gold ball.”

Senior Bri Davis has been a strong competitor, especially in batting, all season long and this was no different against the Badgers. In the second inning, Davis smacked an out of the park home run, hitting the ball across the street into the neighborhood.

“Thought the season is over, I will never forget the memories made,” Davis said. “This has definitely been an unforgettable one. I have it four home runs this season, the most I have ever had in one season and that is a very special thing to accomplish especially since it is my senior year.”

The second game in the series was held at Eastland on Saturday, Apr. 29. The Maidens once again had a tough game against Merkel, falling short by a score of 4-19, ending their season much earlier than expected.
