While most students are taking notes, solving equations, or reading, the health science students are taking blood pressures, learning how to administer injections through fruits, and role playing emergency situations.

Health Science is an elective course where students gain more knowledge of the medical field. Many of the students in the class wish to pursue a career in medicine.

“The health science courses are designed to provide for the development of advanced knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of health careers,” school nurse and health science instructor Betty Molk said. “Students will have hands on experiences for continued knowledge and skill development. As a professional now in the health science field, I would have loved to have this opportunity in high school.”

Health science is tiered into 4 classes- principles of health science, medical terminology, health science theory, and health science practicum.

Principles of health science and medical terminology are a basic introductory class for freshmen and sophomores, while health science theory and and health science practicum are more advanced classes for juniors and seniors to observe and shadow medical professionals.

“In the theory and practicum class, we are preparing to shadow at the Comanche County Medical Center and at Western Hills Assisted Living,” senior Jennifer Anaya said. “We will be able to observe procedures such as x-rays, physical therapy, and surgeries. We will be able to see the behind the scenes acts of medicine.”

In preparation for the shadowing experience, third and fourth year students are learning how to take basic vital signs. Blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, and respirations are all important in the field of medicine.

“We are currently working on how to properly assess blood pressure,” senior Celia Suarez said. “We will need to be prepared for whatever comes our way.”

Many students taking the health science courses intend to continue their dreams in a career of medicine.

“I plan on becoming a forensic pathologist and will work in a hospital setting while determining causes of death,” Anaya said.

Suarez said she is not exactly sure what she wants to do yet.

“I am open minded to whatever possibilities comes my way and will be prepared thanks to health science,” Suarez said. “Health science has given me a huge advantage and will allow me to decide what I want to do a lot sooner.”
