The Comanche powerlifting team traveled to Stephenville Saturday, February 16 and competed at the Stephenville invitational meet.

Seniors Kendel Beck (242 pound weight class) and Kade Mercer (181 pound weight  class) both placed first in the competition. Beck was also named Outstanding Heavy Lifter which means he had the best pound for pound total from lifters in the 198 weight class and above.

Beck became the first lifter in school history to total 1700  pounds (650 squat, 435 bench press, 615 deadlift) in one meet, breaking the previous record of 1655 pounds set by Pedro Bernal in 2017.

“It felt good to get my name in the books with a good total,” Beck said. “But I won’t be satisfied until I bring home the gold medal at state.”

Mercer placed first despite a hamstring injury.

“I was happy to be able to increase my total from the last meet,” Mercer said. “My injury might still be holding me back a little on deadlift, but I think I will be healed by regionals.”

Senior Zach Foster placed third in the 165 weight class with a total of 1050 and sophomore Aaron Suniga placed third with a total of 815 in the 132 pound weight class.

On the girls side, junior Emily Guerrero placed 3rd with 750 pounds in her weight class.

In addition, the boys’ team won second place overall.
