Kade Mercer and Kendel Beck competed in the Division 3 THSPA State Championships on Mar. 23.

Senior Kade Mercer (181 lb class) set new school records in the bench press with a lift of 350 pounds and set the total record with a total of 1335 pounds.

Mercer placed ninth out of sixteen lifters in his weight class.

“It was a cool experience to compete at the state meet,” Mercer said. “I was happy to improve on my total.”

Senior Kendel Beck (275 lb class) claimed a state championship with a total of 1785 pounds. Beck became the first boy in school history to win state in powerlifting. He now joins the ranks of former CHS student Kailee Hansmire who won the girls’ state powerlifting championship in 2014.

“I was truly blessed that God had this in store for me,” Beck said. “I had told myself a million times I wanted to win and I accomplished my goal.”

Mercer’s three lifts were 485 on squat, 350 on bench press, and 500 on deadlift and Beck’s were 700 on squat, 460 on bench press, and 625 on deadlift.

Beck currently holds the school records in squat, bench, deadlift, and the total for both the 242 lb class and the 275 lb class.
